Discover more about EarthWise Energy

One way to use clean energy without producing it yourself is to buy renewable energy certificates (RECs). RECs were created nationally as a way to verify energy was produced by a renewable resource.

With this program, you choose to match 25%, 50% or 100% of your household energy use at a cost of 1 cent more per kilowatt-hour. We dedicate RECs from SRP renewables that are equal to your selected amount, and then buy replacement RECs for our Sustainable Portfolio. We will provide you with an annual statement that verifies the source of RECs dedicated to you. It’s an easy and affordable way you can help advance renewable energy.

SRP EarthWise Energy makes it easy for you to green up your energy mix with renewable resources. While renewables are more affordable than ever, they still cost more than traditional resources. For 1 cent more per kilowatt-hour, you can enroll in the program and have peace of mind that you’re doing more to advance renewable energy.

Use the calculator below to estimate your additional monthly cost with EarthWise Energy.

What is renewable energy?

Renewable energy is electricity generated from sources such as the sun, wind, water, forest debris (biomass) and the earth’s own heat (geothermal). Renewable energy sources can be used to produce electricity with fewer environmental impacts.

How will subscribing to EarthWise Energy affect my bill?

When you sign up, your bill will show an EarthWise Energy line item reflecting the 25%, 50% or 100% option.

Subscribers to EarthWise Energy choose to pay 1 cent more per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for energy than non-subscribers. For example, a customer using 1,000 kWh in a given month would pay an additional $10.00 to green up 100% of their energy use, or $5.00 based on 50% of their usage that month.

When it costs SRP less than 1 cent per kWh to buy replacement RECs, any and all remaining funds will support SRP’s renewable energy and energy-efficiency programs through its tracking mechanism, the Environmental Programs Cost Adjustment Factor (EPCAF). This benefits all customers by helping to advance these sustainable options.

Why does EarthWise Energy cost more?

When you join EarthWise Energy, you are purchasing renewable energy certificates (RECs) from solar, wind, geothermal, and/or biomass projects. RECs enable you to further reduce carbon emissions associated with your power consumption above and beyond the green energy SRP already provides for all of its customers. EarthWise Energy costs more because these renewable energy resources typically have a higher cost than traditional energy resources. In addition, wind and solar produce power intermittently, for example when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing. When these sources are not producing electricity, an equal amount of other reliable generation must be available at all times to meet customers’ needs.

Can I join if I am on SRP Budget Billing?

Yes, you are eligible for SRP Budget Billing, which balances the seasonal highs and lows of your energy bill for a more consistent monthly payment. Your energy costs are averaged over the year with periodic adjustments based on changes in usage or electricity prices. You can expect to see a slight increase on your bill once you join EarthWise Energy.

Can I use SRP eBill with EarthWise Energy?

Yes, you can receive an SRP eBill notification from SRP.

Does EarthWise Energy work with any residential price plan?

EarthWise Energy is an easy way to green up any price plan except our prepay program, M-Power.

Can I join if I already am a rooftop solar or Community Solar customer?

Yes, in addition to the solar energy you generate through either your rooftop solar system or Community Solar, the remaining amount of energy supplied by SRP can be “greened up” with EarthWise Energy. If your rooftop solar or Community Solar generation provides all of your energy for the month, there will be no EarthWise Energy supplement that month.

Can I cancel the program at any time?

Yes, there is no time commitment associated with the program.

Sustainable resources provide 14.5% of SRP customers’ energy needs, which is ahead of schedule to meet our target of 20% by 2020. We plan to have more than 700 MW of utility-scale generation online by Fiscal Year 2020, which includes solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydroelectric generation. EarthWise Energy consists of 1/3 solar, 1/3 wind and 1/3 biomass derived from these renewable plants:

Sandstone Solar Facility: In Florence, Arizona. SRP receives all of the energy produced at this 45-megawatt (MW) solar plant.
Dry Lake Wind Power Project: Located near Heber, Arizona. It's the first commercial-scale wind farm in the state. It generates approximately 127 MW of clean, renewable energy.
Novo BioPower: Novo Power, APS and SRP teamed up to use the power generated from the 27 MW biomass power plant located in Snowflake, Arizona.
